Bistro One first opened its doors in December 1994 in a small building on North Cumberland Street, in Thunder Bay. It was a Bistro specializing in exquisite, flavourful food, paired with complimentary wines. In 2002, Bistro One moved to their current location where the atmosphere finally matched the reputation they had built. Facilities include a private dining area suitable for many occasions including meetings, birthdays and other celebrations as well as a modern dining room, featuring local art and an inviting atmosphere.
Chef/owner Jean Robillard and his staff are passionate about food and fine wine. While the menu changes daily, there are many favourites that don’t change such as the appetizer of sea scallops in a maple syrup champagne sauce or the rosemary roasted rack of New Zealand lamb with gorgonzola butter. Chef Maria Costanzo prepares amazing desserts that are a major contribution to the sensation of dining at Bistro One. Her signature warm chocolate gateau with a raspberry coulis and Espresso Ice Cream is renowned as well as her deep fried banana, chocolate and hazelnut spring rolls with a five spice ice cream. Bistro One strives to be innovative and Chef Robillard is constantly experimenting with new ways to surprise and delight the clientele using locally grown food where possible and only the best quality meats, seafoods and produce.
Exquisite food is complemented by exquisite wine. Bistro One has the ability to pair each menu item with an extraordinary wine, many of which are not available anywhere else in Thunder Bay. The staff are knowledgeable and encourage our clients to request assistance if necessary! With a wine selection of over 100 wines, the options are endless.
Bistro One has made the list of top 200 Restaurants in Canada since 1997, named best hospitality establishment by the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, has won the Eat Smart Award of Excellence by Ontario Healthy Restaurant program and has a triple CAA diamond rating. Bistro One continues to win awards in the Wine Spectator Magazine for Award of Excellence given to only select restaurants with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style.
If you're looking to try a night of amazing food, service and atmosphere for your next night out, I highly suggest Bistro One. Prices range from appetizers for $12 to main courses as low as $25 and up.
I have always had a true love affair with great food and appreciate the relationship between wines and dining. Having grown up in a French Canadian home in Ottawa, most social events revolved around the kitchen table so it seemed natural that I would eventually gravitate towards the restaurant industry.
With a passion for all things outdoors, I came to Thunder Bay to attend Lakehead University and completed four years in the Outdoor Recreation program before part-time waitering jobs became full-time management positions at numerous local restaurants. In 1994, my wife Susan and I decided that we should pair my passion for food and my restaurant knowledge and Bistro One was born.
Our vision was to provide our patrons with fresh and dynamic menu items, the most extensive wine selection and pairings in Thunder Bay and service that was professional and attentive yet familiar. Bistro One was born and we've continued to keep our high standards and our vision.
When I'm away from the restaurant, I flourish in my kitchen at home and take the opportunity to host dinner parties and family gatherings where I can experiment with new ideas for the restaurant and entertain family and friends
Most evenings you'll find me roaming around the restaurant chatting to our clientele and ensuring that our high standards of food and service are being maintained. Say hi, tell me what you think and share your experience.
Welcome to Bistro One.
